(小学英语教学的新变化)

Abstract

The notions of the curriculum change under the background of insisting on quality education. The new Curriculum Standard pay more attention to reflect the values upon the students' development through language learning, and pay more attention to the different learning characteristics and individual differences, fully consider the continuity and the sustainment upon the language learners. So the teachers should earnestly renew the notions and change their roles, strive to reflect the teacher as the leading role and students' main body status in the classroom teaching, and strive to cultivate students' comprehensive abilities of using language.

课程理念的变化在坚持素质教育的大背景下,新的课程标准更注重体现语言学习对学生发展的价值, 关注语言学习者的不同学习特点和个体差异,充分考虑语言学习的渐进性和持续性。教师要切实更新理念,转变角色,力求体现教师在课堂教学中的主导作用和学生学习的主体地位,努力培养学生综合运用语言的能力。

New Changes in Primary School Teaching  of English

1 Introduction

1.1 Background   

In 2001, China launched the Curriculum Reform of basic education. Ten years of reform practice strongly promoted the educational thoughts and effectively guided the teaching reforms and the transformation of talents fostering patterns. As for the National Education Development Plan (2010-2020) proposed to keep pace with the times and required to propose curriculum reform, each curriculum conducted a comprehensive revision and perfection to the experimental one. After ten years of use, some contents and assessment requirements of the old Curriculum Standard need to be done with the corresponding adjustment and improvement. Just under this background, Compulsory Educational English Curriculum Standard Version 2011 was born.  The guideline to revise the New Curriculum Standard is to keep up with the times, it reasserts the important roles of English curriculum education to help the students to build up the right philosophy and values. Doing some necessary adjustment on its contents, standards and the requirements, in order to make it press close to the students' actualities and confirm to the directions of education reform, such as adding the connotation of three-dimensional targets and making a more detailed explanation about the general goals to cultivate students' comprehensive using of the language skills, language knowledge, learning strategy, culture consciousness and emotional attitude.   Five aspects including the language skills, language knowledge, learning strategy, culture consciousness, emotional attitude consists of the English course total objectives. On the one hand, not only it embodies the instrumental characteristics of English learning, also it reflects the humanity, on the other hand, not only it is beneficial for the students to develop the abilities of language use, but also it is beneficial for them to develop thinking abilities.  

The revised new standards highlight more on the diversion from passing on the language knowledge to fostering the language comprehensive using. It emphasizes that the process of learning English is not an experience of boring recitation and memorization, but it is a process of learn actively by themselves, and a process to gradually promote the abilities to use language and humanity cultivation.   

1.2 Brief introduction   

Foreign language education had better attach importance to students' comprehensive language using in replace to passing on language knowledge. The changes of the course objectives will bring the changes of teaching modes and methods. The course teaching has become to be the mode centering on the students rather than centering on the teachers , and it emphasizes the students' participation and experiencing. The revised standard describes the main principle to “do

things in English”, emphasizing to foster the comprehensive language using, and during that process, we as teachers had better develop their language abilities, thinking abilities and the ability of communication and cooperation.  

In my teaching, I get to know to lead the students to have a good attitude of English learning in accordance with their personal development in their whole life, and attach importance to the language learning so as to enable them to make greater efforts to study English. I think it’s very critical to solve their thoughts in order to lead them to study English hard. Besides that, to instruct them how to use English to enrich their lives and improve themselves, and to make them understand the diversity of the world cultures and customs through learning the basic knowledge and skills, and lead them to expand mind and see the world in correct views. Thereafter they will treat the people, society and the world in a positive attitude so as to shape their good personality character and open psychology. And they will live healthy in the society. That is to say, we have to pay more attention to cultivate the students to form the right outlook and values in accordance with the features of English humanity. All of above bring me the changes of teaching notions after I learned it.   

2 The current situations of the teaching modes

2.1 Formalize on the popular teaching methods  

 At present, the communicative method, situational method, TPR method, task-based method and etc , are often and well used. We often see the application of the above methods in many demonstration classes and open classes. As for the task-based teaching method, some teachers take for that the Curriculum Standard only advocate the task-based teaching method, therefore they neglect to use the other good reasonable teaching methods while their teaching. Actually, in foreign Language teaching whether the task-based learning method are suitable for China’s condition or not is still controversial, hence the objectives of the New Curriculum Standard are being adjusted.   

The primary school English teaching should fully consider the psychological characteristics of children, and cultivate students' interests in English study, so that the students can learn a lot in a relaxed and lively atmosphere. Therefore, there are a lot of English teachers trying out to create so many colorful and various kinds of teaching activities, for example, singing English songs, dancing and etc, in order to stimulate the interests of the students. In my opinion, the teachers should attach importance to the actual promotion of the students’ English levels, but not to overemphasize the effects of singing and dancing.  

The aims of English teaching lie in promoting the abilities of comprehensive using of English. Singing and dancing is only a means, not the destination. We can see that, some teachers blindly design some songs and dancing activities in their class, they want to attract the students better, so that the students will want to learn English and want to have English classes. But I think it is not consistent with the children’s psychological characteristics, also it does not conform to the regulations of learning English. A good English teacher should consider everything in view of the actual conditions of the students, and to really improve the English levels of the students as its starting point, and pay attention to the actual effects. Please don’t do too much formalized things in classroom teachings.   

2.2 Imbalance on listening, speaking, reading, and writing

I think, there are some close relationships between listening-saying and reading-writing, especially in the elementary schools. First of all, to enable the students listen, and the
