        41 Science Drive

        Madison, WI55511

        (606)262-3322

        Nov.24,1997

        Dear sir,

If an ability to take direction well, and to carry out orders faithfully, is important to you, then I may be a good man for the job you advertised in the Chronicle of August 15.

The job sounds particularly interesting because it precisely the kind of work I have wanted to do for years. My working experience thus far has, I think, given me the attitudes and the understanding that would enable me to learn the details of the position you’ve advertised.

I’d very much appreciate the chance to talk to you, and to get your opinion on whether my background and inclinations would be suitable for the job you offer.

I can be reached by telephone at 398-4123.

        Sincerely

        June 24,1997

        Dear Mrs.Chapman,

I am extremely interested in your graduate program in advanced math which has been widely recognized in China. Now I am writing to find out if I can enter this program.

I graduated in July 1995, from the Open University in the Province of Liaoning. After my graduation I have been working with a local tax bureau till the present moment. During my two-year service here, I have discovered that my math ability is very limited and I have decided now to improve myself in this area. In this letter, a resume of my education background and work experience is enclosed.

To prove that my English is good enough to enter your program, I took the TOEFL test in May and my test score is expected to arrive at your office sometime next month. Yes, I wonder if there is any possibility of getting a financial support from your university.

I am looking forward to be a reply at your earliest convenience.

        Sincerely,

Although the average American is likely to have an opinion about a political issue or personality, his opinion is not necessarily informed. For most Americans, politics is at best only a hobby, and political awareness must be purchased by giving up more pleasurable activities. Few citizens devote much of their leisure time to reading about politics listening to political news, or watching political programs on television.

(3). It is generally accepted that the experiences of the child in his first years largely determine his character and later personality. Every experience teaches the child something and the effects are cumulative. ‘Upbringing’ is normally used to refer to the treatment and training of the child within the home. This is closely related to the treatment and training of the child in school, which is usually distinguished by the term ‘education’. In a society such as ours, both parents and teachers are responsible for the opportunities provided for the development of the child, so that upbringing and education are interdependent.

(4).No wonder all his pupils loved Socrates. But he made some dangerous enemies by his strange ways of teaching and asking questions. Some of the rulers in Athens did not like people to be encouraged to ask too many questions for fear they would begin asking questions about what their rulers were doing. At last his enemies had him arrested, and he was condemned to death.

They speed through the air at nearly half of speed of light. This is so fast that we can’t see that the bolt actually travels from ground up to the clouds. In that short instant, the electricity heats the air around it up to five times the temperature of the surface of the sun.

(6).Television was not invented by any one person. Nor did it spring into being overnight. It evolved gradually over along period from the ideas of many people——each one building on the work of their predecessors. The process began in 1873, when it was accidentally discovered that the electrical resistance of the element selenium(硒) varied in proportion to the intensity of the light shining on it. Scientists quickly recognized that this provided way of transforming light variations into electrical signals. Almost immediately a number of schemes were proposed for sending pictures by light(it was, of course, before radio)

(7).The early volunteers deserve special respect and admiration, for they were working along and doing hard and unpleasant tasks. Often they were regarded by the authorities as troublemakers rather than angels. The situation improved as their number grew and as the society became aware of their achievements. Gradually, the volunteers began to receive funds from private sources and form the government. They organized themselves, they became professional, and they did a considerable amount of good work. Then, in the last ten or fifteen years, changes in society brought about a transformation of volunteerism.
